AT&T’s bringing free wifi to the iPhone — once it finishes wigging out

Hey, do you guys want to invent out our AT&T impression? It’s pretty awesome. Okay, okay, here it goes: “Great news, we’re offering free WiFi to iPhone users! Wait, no we’re not. Yes we are! Oh, no, wait, cancel that.” Pretty spot-on, right? Sadly, it looks like we might need something else to rag on shortly, since an AT&T spokesman started clearing the air with the New York Times late final week. The bottom line — for the moment, besides — is that AT&T has “long planned” to offer up its WiFi hotspots as a free value-add for the iPhone and all of the other WiFi-equipped devices in its arsenal, but that the brief enabling of the feature thus far and the mention on AT&T’s site were results of human error, and the company isn’t prepared at that point to commit to an actual launch period or details on how the service will work. Hey, at least we know we’re not just suffering from some brutal hallucinations now.

iPlot: graphing calculator for your iPhone

iPhone iPlot - Image 1

Useful homebrewed applications for Apple’s iPhone mobile just keep coming and coming: Homebrew developer Markus Sintonen released iPlot, a graphing calculator that draws mathematical functions, which would prove to be very useful in classes. It can solve and find several factors, such as roots, minimum, and maximum.

This application can additionally let you do nearly everything that is expected of a graphic calculator, including basic ones such as sin(x), ln(x), and even csc(x). As for the actual interface, iPlot proves to be fairly versatile with its option to zoom in and out,  and even zoom to any defined region.

Those who are interested in grabbing that application may do so by downloading and installing it directly through the iPhone’s Installer.app. Enjoy!

Apple promo references 2.6GHz MacBook

Not that we wouldn’t eventually expect a 2.6GHz MacBook, but Apple’s Hot News site is running that promo that references a new, upgraded model of the laptop (which right now only reaches 2.4GHz). Our take? We’re thinking typo, not premature announcement.

Moshi’s Zefyr MacBook cooler is way hot

whether you haven’t faced MacBook Air overheating issues, you’re clearly in the minority, and regular ol’ MacBook users have been faced with plenty burnination of their own. While there are plenty of laptop coolers out there, none have been so specifically designed to address these two perennial overheaters as Moshi’s Zefyr. The aluminum heatsink setup has an “ultra-silent” USB-powered fan and is fairly minimal, just concentrating on the MacBooks’ problem spots up top. Even better for Air users: you won’t be monopolizing your lone USB plug to work it. Zefyr is available now for $75 in silver or black.

Apple finally settings its legal sights on the HiPhone?

Oh, there are plenty of naughty Chinese iPhone knockoffs out there, but the HiPhone may be the reigning champion these days — so it kind of seemed like a matter of duration before Apple loosed the hounds on distributors of the device. We don’t have confirmation or proper human translation of the above legal notice, but it would seem Apple’s European counsel Bird & Bird has delivered at least one notice to an unnamed distributor threatening €25,000 in damages (and €15,000 in legal fees) for HiPhone sales. Hardly the case of the century, but we’ll let you know whether we construct out anything.

Rumor: decrypted iPhone 2.0 firmware reveals 3G option

Now here’s the latest supposed proof that a 3G Apple iPhone is indeed in the works. According to a third-party iPhone developer, Chronic Productions, they managed to uncover a undoubtful setting embedded in the iPhone 2.0 Beta 5. And yes, the setting has something to do with toggling 3G off and on.

If you’re a bit skeptical, here’s the dev’s challenge in order to prove the claim, assuming that you can perform the task. “If you do not believe me, next decrypt the beta5 rootfs dmg, and see for yourself in /Applications/Preferences.app/Network.plist,” said the developer from Chronic Productions.

But a word of caution: whether you did manage to compose the 3G option seem on your Apple iPhone, be warned that your EDGE-powered iPhone will crash whether you activate 3G. You can try whether you have the essential tools needed to unlock the 3G option, but be careful.

More updates to come!
